What is Building Lifting?

Building lifting is a technique by which buildings are raised through hydraulic jacks. Elevating a house is a tedious and slow but budget-saving process. The entire house, including piers and pillars, has to be raised evenly. Our companies use different types of technologies.

Main Reasons Why You Might Want To Lift Building

To move the building

Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, people want to move a house from one location to another. They might want to move a house for historical preservation, to get it away from an area that experiences frequent flooding, or because a new highway is being built nearby. Whatever the reason, this kind of house lifting involves lifting up the building, moving it to the new location, and then setting it down again.

To add a new floor

Building lifting might also be done because the homeowner wants to add a new floor in order to make the house bigger. For example, someone might want to turn a one-story house into a two-story house.

To excavate a basement

You also might want to lift a house in order to create a basement. People do this because basements increase the property value and provide additional living space.

To keep the building safe from flooding

Buildings are also lifted to keep the living area above the vast majority of floods, or to the required Flood Protection Elevation (FPE). Many houses were raised in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Sandy.

To repair a foundation

Underpinning is a different type of building lifting because it involves repairing a damaged foundation. While the house is indeed lifted, it’s not listed in the same way as you would lift a house in order to move it or to add a basement.

Understanding How Buildings Are Lifted?

The standard method adopted by most Seattle house-lifters involves running steel beams under the house, then using synchronized jacks to raise it while adding cribbing underneath. This method is executed in stages. There are two main components needed here: hydraulic jacks for the house lifting, and cribbing for support.

During the elevation process, the house-lifters cut the house separate from its foundations and raise it on hydraulic jacks. They are then held by temporary supports, called cribs, while a new or extended foundation is constructed below. First, holes are made at intervals in the foundation wall so that a series of steel beams can be installed at critical points under the floor framing. Each beam is placed so that they run perpendicular to the floor. The second set of beams is then placed below and perpendicular to the first set.

Safely Lift Your Building

  • Our teams elevate structures using the Unified Jacking Method. Unified jacking enables large, heavy structures to be lifted intact as one piece. We do this by providing continuous points of structural support so the risk of damage to the structure is very low.
  • Pier and Beam’s foundations are common in houses built in areas where soil conditions aren’t ideal for concrete slab foundations.
  • Instead of resting directly on a concrete slab, the home is elevated on concrete pilings or wooden posts that allow for the coastal or river water to run freely beneath it.
